i've never used a backpack through highschool, usually just like a tote bag or purse would that be normal?

also do you pack your own lunch, eat at a cafeteria, or go out for lunch usually?
Like everyone uses backpacks. I didn't own one before going to Chile but I got to borrow my hostbrothers. I mean I guess you could use a purse but people might find you kind of "snobby" if it's like a nice leather bag or something.
And most people bring food. There usually aren't cafeterias just a "kiosko" where you can buy candy and stuff and completos (like hot-dogs) etc. You usually aren't allowed to leave the school during school hours unless a parent comes to pick you up (it sucks..)

ok, yeah i have a backpack but it would be lame to bring it to school cause i sewed on a huge canadian flag! haha, and i do not want to be "snobby" or anything with a purse.... i guess i'll just get a feel for my school when i get there!

depends on the school. My school had a kiosko AND a caf. But I didn't like the food served, so my host mom ended up making me lunch every night.

I used one of my host sister's backpacks, and ended up buying one of my own. It wasn't too expensive either.

let's see...i'd definitely recommend keeping a little journal of all the words you learn, esp. the chilean slang. it's a really good way to learn and it's also a great icebreaker. my friends at school would love to look at my notebook.
also, take the opportunity to travel, if you can. one thing i really regret not doing is traveling more because there is SO much to see and it's a gorgeous country.
i'll try to think of more...
