that is definitely what I'm doing if I end up in a cold country. I don't care if it'll be August.

That's a good idea! I am going to try not to worry too much about this, though, because I know I'm not going to look my best after a trans-Atlantic flight; that's just unrealistic. I remember last time going into a bathroom in the airport and being somewhat horrified that I had to meet the family looking the way I did, but they totally understood. One of the first things I did when I got to the house was to take a shower, though.

I still haven't started thinking about packing. I have so much shopping to do first...aaaah...

I'm definitely taking my boots (not Ugg, a cheaper-but-still-nice pair) in my suitcase. I'll wear tennis shoes on the plane and put a pair of flats and 2 flip flops in my bag. I'm not worried about the space that much because even though I'm taking a big suitcase and a carryon suitcase, I'm not bringing all that much stuff.

Having just one host family makes it a lot easier i.e. host gifts!

Although I was wondering about shoes. Shoes are bulky and take up space but is it worth it to bring them?

Bring a pair or two of flip-flops/slippers/whatever-you-call-them, 1 pair of tennis shoes (maybe 2 if you're using one pair for serious running/sports and another for other stuff), one pair of sandals, and one pair of dressy-ish heels/flats. Other stuff is extra.

Your family won't care. After a flight from Canada to Chile, right before you meet your host family, the last thing you'll be worried about is what shoes you're wearing. Believe me. =)

I would advise not to bring much as a carry on... I brought books and games and stuff, but never even used them! xD

Edit: Oh, and about shoes.... if you're going to Asia and have over size 6-ish, don't expect to easily find shoes in your size, so pack the ones that you need!

Believe it or not, a couple of our hosted students brought linens... Not sure what they were thinking... Maybe we didn't use sheets and towels?

Don't waste the space/weight!! (And if your host family requires you to provide your own, time to move!)

I always bring tons of stuff, only to have it sit in my backpack being unused.

I have a shoe size 9 1/2 in women. So do you think I should just bring a bunch of my own?(I wear mostly flats)

Exactly, hahahaha.

Probably... I'm around the same size and everything people here have told me is that size 7+ in Asia (for women) is superrrr hard to find.

Very, very true
In the cheap women's shoe stores I always went to in Japan, they generally sold size 5-7.5 (I have freaking tiny feet)
So pack lots of shoes

Me too! I never use any - of except for my books. There's no way could fly 15-20 hours (from denmark to the US ) without a book!
